This recent visit to Intergeo has opened my eye to the fast hardware evolution in the UAVs. The presentation below summarizes some of these trends
- Connected APPS
The success of current mobile app ecosystems is due largely to the opening of the marketplace by Apple and Google to third party developers; these take the risk of innovation away from the platform
- However, there are signs from the market that a consolidation phase is likely to take place and that it becomes difficult for an app developer to get attention. (Tapptic study: user only regularly uses 6 apps on his smartphone)
- Connected devices and cars
- The market of wearable devices linked to a communication device is an upcoming market. Uptake of smart watches (5 million to yes old in 2014 according to Canalys) or visualisation tools like Google glass are set to take off in 2014. The ecosystem of these wearable devices brings in new players that go directly especially in the product solution space
- The M2M (machine to machine) ecosystem used to be a closed one without standards and with few partners. The 'appiffication' in this space is opening up new application areas; this even reaches to the last 'non-connected ' space: the car
- Connected earth
- Complete new segments are being created in the geo data gathering space: UAV unmaned aerial vehickes, mobile mapping,... with different pricepoints and characteristics are entering the market.
- These data gathering tools gather in a georeferenced way the full spectrum of information thanks to an evolution in sensors: infrared, lightsensors, pointcloud laser or LIDAR, high resolution images, ...
- This creates a huge new opportunity in safety, crop and other monitoring, energy, tourism and increasingly with up-to-date information.
- This area is set to increase by 30% yearly over the next 5 years (Google- Oxera study http://www.oxera.com/Latest-Thinking/News/January-2013/Oxera-quantifies-the-benefits-of-Geo-services-to-g.aspx Oxera report that estimates the revenues from global Geo services at $150 billion to $270 billion per year)
Connected innovation Where is the innovation coming from?
- The innovation, just like with mobile apps, is being outsourced
- Innovation is being created within new concepts of open innovation both on soft and hardware side: co-creation events, campusparty,...
- The digital natives have a lot of the keys to this innovation suceds and their insights are important to look at their living environment
